Think You Need to Register Your Business for Voice Search? Think Again.

If you own a local business, you've probably seen them.

Recently, I've been seeing Facebook ads claiming that millions of potential customers are using Alexa, Siri, Google Home, and other voice assistants to find local businesses—and that if your business isn't "registered" on these platforms, you're essentially invisible.

The ads often promise to get your business "registered" on Alexa, Siri, Google Home, and Google Assistant in just a few minutes.

It sounds impressive.

It also sounds like something every local business owner should immediately do.

But there's a problem: You don't need to buy a special voice-search registration to make your business visible online.

And some of the claims being made in these ads are, at best, misleading.

Your Business Doesn't Need a Special "Voice Search Registration"

In other words, you can manage your business information in legitimate ways on the platforms customers actually use.

You don't need a mysterious registration certificate or a magic five-minute submission to make your business "visible to voice search."

What About Those "60% of Consumers" Claims?

Another part of the Facebook ads that caught my attention.

The ads I've been seeing make very specific claims about the percentage of consumers who use Alexa, Siri, and Google Home to find local businesses.

The problem?

Where is the evidence?

When a marketing company makes a dramatic statistic like this, you should always ask where the number comes from.

Is it from Google?

Apple?

Amazon?

A recognized research organization?

Or is it simply a statistic being used to make the service sound more important than it really is?

Business owners should be especially careful when an advertisement creates urgency by suggesting you're "losing sales every day" unless you buy the advertised service immediately.

That's a classic marketing tactic.

Here's What Really Matters for Local Businesses

Instead of worrying about whether you've paid someone to "register" your business for voice search, focus on what actually helps customers find and contact you.

1. Have a Professional Business Website

Your website is still one of your most important online assets.

It gives potential customers a place to learn about your company, understand your services, see your work, read testimonials, find your contact information, and ultimately decide whether they want to call you.

More importantly, your website provides search engines with valuable information to better understand your business.

A poorly designed website can make a great business look unprofessional.

A well-designed website can turn a searcher into a customer.

2. Claim and Optimize Your Google Business Profile

For local businesses, your Google Business Profile is extremely important.

When someone searches Google for a service "near me," Google uses your business information to decide which local businesses are relevant.

Your profile should be complete, accurate, and kept up to date.

That means having the right:
  • Business name
  • Primary business category
  • Services
  • Phone number
  • Website
  • Hours
  • Service areas
  • Photos
  • Customer reviews
  • Business description
  • Links to appropriate pages on your website

And don't simply create the profile and forget about it.

Your Google Business Profile should be treated as an extension of your website and your overall online marketing strategy.

3. Make Your Website and Google Business Profile Work Together

This is where many small businesses miss an important opportunity.

Your website and Google Business Profile shouldn't exist as two completely separate pieces of your marketing.

They should work together.

Your Google Business Profile can send potential customers to your website.

Your website provides Google with additional information about your business, services, locations, and expertise.

Google can use information from your official website and other sources to compile business information and local search results.

The result is a much stronger online presence than simply paying someone to put your business into a supposed "voice registry."

Don't Chase the Latest Marketing Buzzword

Every few years, there's a new buzzword in digital marketing.

First, it was websites.

Then SEO.

Then social media.

Then mobile search.

Then voice search.

Now we're hearing about artificial intelligence and AI search.

The technology changes.

But the fundamentals haven't changed nearly as much as some marketers would have you believe.

Build a good website.

Provide useful information.

Make sure Google knows who you are and what you do.

Keep your business information accurate.

Earn good customer reviews.

Make it easy for potential customers to contact you.

Those fundamentals are far more valuable than jumping on every new marketing service advertised in your Facebook feed.

So, Do You Need to Register Your Business for Voice Search?

No—not in the way these advertisements make it sound.

You should absolutely make sure your business information is accurate on the major platforms where customers search.

You should absolutely pay attention to local SEO.

And you should absolutely make sure your website is professional, mobile-friendly, fast, informative, and designed to turn visitors into customers.

But don't let a Facebook advertisement convince you that your business is "invisible" unless you pay for a special voice-search registration.
You're probably better off spending your money improving the foundation of your online presence.
